Oh, So Weary…Spiritual Warfare

The word "weary" is not one I use often but today it fits. There are times when I feel beaten down by life. Everyday burdens and responsibilities can be exhausting. Health issues can affect my energy level and endurance. Body and spirit can become weak and ineffectual. We live in a society where despair is rampant, but we cannot  allow ourselves to be defeated by it. The war between good and evil has already been won. The death and resurrection of Jesus sealed the victory for all of humanity. However, as long as we live in a sin-filled world, we will face individual battles. Some of the conflicts will be fought against unseen circumstances and entities. These will be  inexplicable and beyond comprehension. Spiritual battles rage constantly around us, according to the Bible. Conflict can even take place within the human mind as we wrestle against a fleshly nature and intrusive thoughts.

Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of thethe darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Paul warned the young believers at Ephesus that etrials and opposition are to be expected in their walk with Christ. That warning is still relevant today we should prepare ourselves. A working knowledge and understanding of His Word, as well as a close relationship with God, are essential for preparation. While fighting these forces, each person may be affected in ways he or she might not recognize as spiritual. We can rest assured that God is present and in control. We protect ourselves with the tools He had made just for this purpose. When the battle grows long and we become tired, He renews our strength. God reminds us in His Word that He is the source of strength and perseverance through all things.

Isaiah 40:31 “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;they shall mount up with wings like eagles;they shall run and not be weary;they shall walk and not faint.”

This is one of my favorite verses and such a wonderful promise it is! We can finally trust God to keep it faithfully. Each believer receives everything he or she needs to fight. It is imperative that we study the Bible and become familiar with scripture so that we know how to use the tools God has provided. We are not helpless, nor at the mercy of evil forces. Satan may triumph for a time, he has already been defeated by our Lord Jesus Christ. With Jesus, our salvation was bought and won. The deal is done!

Ephesians 6:10-20Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.”

Ephesians 6:10-20 describes the weapons and shields of protection that God intends for us.Every weapon and shield has its own effective purpose. Although Satan and his minions are defeated, they will continue to torment those within their reach. Our battle will not be completely finished until Christ returns and banishes Satan from Earth. We must remain vigilant and wise until then. Satan would love to see us destroyed. Remember that God abides and is capable of winning any battle. If we live according to God's Word, we will have an advantage over anything that comes our way.

Dear Father,

I know by Your Word that Satan and his demons are loose on the world. I know that he seeks our destruction and our distraction from worshiping you. I know that You have already defeated him but that the fight will continue until the end of this world. Please, Lord grant me wisdom and nerve to stand firm in the faith. Let me not tire but refresh me for the battle each day. You are the protector and fortress and I praise you with everything I have.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
